Samsung made Galaxy S4 is, no doubt, the most popular Android phone ever made. This handset is known for its big and bright display. The resolution of the screen is 1920 x 1080. It is of 5 inches diagonal length.  The display incorporates OLED technology. It is a HD Super AMOLED screen.

What is this HD Super AMOLED means?

This screen uses OLED or Organic Light Emitting Diodes as its dots by which the screen draws a display. The LCD screens, on the other hand, uses a special type of liquid crystal material which, when electrically stimulated, block light. In this way, LCD’s produces pictures. So, an LCD is a passive screen which needs a background light to display an image. But, the OLED screen is itself emissive. This is the main difference between the two.

What is the advantage of an active OLED screen over a passive LCD?

LCD screens need a source of background light. That background will glow constantly with a fixed luminosity. But the OLDED does not need to have any other light source. So, OLED screens will be more power efficient.

OLED screens do not need to have any lighting arrangement. So, it can be made thinner that an LCD. It is possible to make an OLED screen as thin as a paper. It would be much lighter too.

Because OLED screens are self effusive, they will be brighter than LCDs for the same amount of power.

An LCD cannot show true black because of the background illumination. 100% light blockage is impossible. But as OLEDs do not have back lights, they can show true black. That is why this type of screens have very high contrast ratio. The pictures will look much more sharp, bright and crisp in it.

A True Retina Display

The SGS4 sports a true ‘retina’ display. The pixel density of it is amazing, 441 ppi. A man with 20 – 20 normal vision will not be able to see individual pixels in it even from 7.8 inches height.

PenTile Display

The SGS 4 display uses PenTile technology. It has two sub pixel sets in each pixel group: Green-Red and Green-Blue, instead of standard RGB.
